IMSA Parents' Assciation Council
Technology Committee

The mission of the PAC Technology Committee is to ensure that our students have access to the resources and technology they need in order to develop 21st century technology skills.

Come and join us as we work with the students, parents, faculty, and residential staff to make your student’s time at IMSA rewarding, educational, and productive.

The technology committee is looking for volunteers to help keep the Parents’ Association up to date. Opportunities to volunteer include:

·        Web site updating

·        Working with the IMSA historian to create a “PAC at IMSA” site

·        Advising the students, parents, and school on technology issues

Join us at the next PAC meeting to learn more about technology at IMSA.

Student Technology FAQ:

Q: Does my student need a computer?

A: Nearly all students have a computer in their room. The school has a limited number of computers available for students who cannot afford them. In addition, every hall has a number of shared computers available for student use. A laptop is *not* required, and they are heavy to lug around to classes. If you buy a laptop, have identification information engraved into the case, and be aware that laptops have been known to “disappear” in the past.

Q: Do I need to get a printer for my student?

A: Most students have printers in their rooms, typically color inkjet printers. However, the residence halls have printers that the students can use. These hall printers are usually B&W laser printers.

Q: Do I need to get a scanner for my student?

A: Some students have scanners. There are no shared scanners in the residence halls. The school has scanners that students can use, but there are seldom projects that require this.

Q: How can I email my student?

A: Your student will have an email account on the IMSA computers. Check with her/him for the account information.

Q: Can I IM my student?

A: Once IRN is activated for your student, you can chat directly with her/him using AOL, MSN, or any of the available Instant Messaging programs. If you don’t know how to set this up, ask your student. Students can also use a modem to dial up a service provider, such as AOL or MSN, but you will get charged for telephone usage.

Q: Can my student have a TV in her/his room?

A: No, but DVD drivers are not prohibited on the student's computers.

Q: Does each room have a telephone?

A: Yes. Some parents also provide a wireless phone for their student. Cell phones must be turned off in the main building. With the latest service plans, cell phone calls home may be less expensive than using the service provided by IMSA.

Q: Does my student have voice mail?

A: No, the school phone system does not provide voicemail for the students. You should talk with your student’s roommate to coordinate the purchase of an answering machine. Consider an answering machine with multiple mailboxes, so that each student can get their own messages.

The IMSA Parents' Association exists in order to enhance our children's educational experience by working collaboratively with students, faculty and administration in all aspects of academic and residential life. We are committed to the belief that quality education can be achieved only through parental involvement and support.
